About Prescription Renal Diets
Renal diets work by lowering phosphorus and providing restricted, high-quality protein, with added omega-3 fatty acids and potassium. They are formulated for pets already diagnosed by a veterinarian — they are not maintenance foods for healthy animals.
Cats with kidney disease often drink and eat less, so palatability and moisture matter as much as the formulation. Keeping both a dry bag and pouches or cans on hand lets you rotate textures when appetite drops, and liquid renal support can be added when a cat refuses food entirely.
